The piece below is by artist Eduardo de Froe and appears with kind permission from Gerard Karman.
© Eduard de Froe/Gerard Karman.
'Marlene Dietrich performed in Amsterdam with a group of Jewish cabaret artists (which in Dutch is more like stand up comedians) who had fled Berlin, not long before WW2 started. Marlene was staying in a small hotel which hosted primarily artists, owned by Mr and Mrs Italie.
Eduard de Froe was a friend of the family,  he was like an uncle to Mrs Italie, he used to bring her presents. De Froe and Marlene got along very well, and she agreed to pose for a portrait. De Froe insisted she'd wear a hat, but Marlene didn't own a hat so De Froe brought a hat of his wife which she wears in the painting. She promised to come and collect the painting when it was finished. Because in the mean time WW2 started, she never picked it up.
My Dad, looking for paintings by De Froe, was contacted by Mrs Italie, daughter of the Italie couple owning the hotel. The painting had remained there until the hotel was broken down after the war. They saw the painting as kind of a symbol, of Marlene Dietrich who had managed to escape from the Nazis. Mrs Italie didn't want to sell the painting, but she agreed to swap it for an antique brass-edged mirror'. -Christine.
